Dealing with Moldy Roof Shingles
Before you panic about mold on your roof, know that this isn’t an actual mold. It’s a type of blue-green algae that grows in humid and wet climates and finds home in asphalt shingles. It also mostly grows on the north side of roofs, where they get the most sunlight and shingles stay wet longer.
You can clean moldy roof shingles yourself or with the help of a roofer. If you need a roofer, give yours a call and ask them to come out. If you want to do it yourself, you’ll just need some water and bleach. Here’s what to do.
Mix one part water to one part bleach. You can use a garden hose or a sprayer and you want to wash down your roof until the mold starts running off. Keep watering your roof with the solution until the black streaks are gone, then wash down the roof with plain water. Rain can also help remove the mold but sometimes you have to wait longer than you want to for that to work.
Once you remove the mold, you can take some preventative measures to keep the mold from coming back again. Copper and zinc-based strips will help prevent the mold from coming back and streaking across your roof. You can get these at any home improvement store or online. You’ll want to place them under the top row of shingles on your roof about two inches apart. This will help prevent mold from steaking across your roof the next time wet weather rolls in.
